about

THE OFFICIAL VERSION:

After seven years and as many albums, Tallahatchie finds Reed Turchi returning to the music that lead him to play guitar. Stripped of studio tricks, these songs are presented simply: slide, vocal, acoustic guitar, a wooden chair on a wooden floor. Tallahatchie is named after the river running through North Mississippi, homeland of Hill Country Blues, and is an homage to that genre and its patriarchs (RL Burnside, Fred McDowell, Otha Turner). Not merely a collection of covers, Tallahatchie transcends, as Turchi’s intimate singing, unmistakable slide, and hypnotic rhythms are clearly his own, refreshingly direct and deeply personal.

MY VERSION:

Dear Friends & Listeners,

Welcome to December, the first day of the last month of a year that has been trying for all of us. This may or may not be of interest to you, but in the last few months the band I loved (Caterwauls) disintegrated, I was ripped off for more money than I'd like to admit by a crooked mechanic, and I lost my Grandmother, who was a great friend and lifelong supporter, in the middle of our last tour. We've all had our trials, our wounds may still sting.

But what I'd like to tell you, and to celebrate, is that after all of this, I finally found my way back to the music that lead me to play guitar in the first place -- North Mississippi Hill Country Blues.

And I came home, and I sat down, and I recorded TALLAHATCHIE -- all of my favorite Hill Country songs, and I sang them for myself, and I sang them for you.

There are no studio tricks here. There is no carefully-produced-layers-of-sound. There is no technically-mind-melting-guitar solo. There is just me, and my slide, and these songs.

I've never been brave enough to make such a simple record. I hope you enjoy it, and find some companionship in it, in the way that only music can provide some days, or on some drives.

Thank you for listening, and I hope to see you soon.

Love,

Reed
