about

On a perfect evening in the dry air of the high desert, the aptly named Fairweather Social Club—the newest outdoor venue in Prescott, Arizona—is opening with a band from—where else?—Nashville, Tennessee. Long story, but Reed and the good people of the nearby Raven Café have known each other for years. The audience that gathers in the open territory between beer sales and a food truck includes tourists and locals, couples and families. Two young boys are prepared to spend the entire night barely a foot from the stage, playing air guitar. One day, maybe they’ll be up there. Dancers are eager to dance. Beneath one of those portable chairs-from-a-bag, a sweet old dog settles in under its people.

The band eases into the set with Junior Kimbrough’s “All Night Long.” Things feel right. The sound is good, and somebody has provided a growler of high gravity beer. When they get into their cover of Greyhounds’ “It’s Alright,” Reed has a story to tell. Go Bobcats. Already, it’s clear that this is going to be one of those nights when the music draws everyone together: little boys, dancers, old dogs, friends and strangers. And the band? They’ve got a lot more songs to play.
